GNS3 on live cd

IMPORTANT : the downloads are also available on http://www.gns3-labs.com  for a stable connection you can download the ISO and tar from there itself.  thanx a ton, lenny.

USB users having a problem with dynamips crashing — > change the working directory to somewhere on your USB , most probably your usb will be like this /mnt/sdb1 and so you can specify the working directory in your .net file like this  workingdir = /mnt/sdb1  .  thanx suhail and rajan for pointing out the issue.

Also would anyone like a live cd based on puppylinux, i think the entire cd should come around 140 mb with gns3 and 110 mb with only dynamips and dynagen.

OK, i finally got the gns3 slax live cd uploaded on 4shared, i have had to split the files in three , the total download comes to around 250 mb approx. you will need to use a program like 7-zip to extract the iso as well as the usb versions. to download the same headover to the newly createad downloads page on the right.

  1. I gotta say this is pretty sweet. I love the idea of having a portable lab. It would be amazing if the gns3 would work on the Thumb Drive. I’m wondering if it would be possible at that point say with a 4 gig Thumb Drive to keep everything pertaining to you labs on the disc configs,IOS and such. Thanks again for your great work!

  2. hi marc gns3 actually works on the thumb drive, just copy the contents of the cd to your thum drive and go to the boot directory and then double click the bootinst.bat file which will make your thumb drive bootable.
just remember when using from your thumb drive or usb drive or your mp3 player just keep your working dir in the thumb drive or the usb drive or the mp3 player.

  3. Thanks alot! I specified my working directory to exactly what was said “workingdir = /mnt/sdb1 “. I t seems to be working great.

  4. cool , hope you enjoy working with it and if you could see if any improvements could be made i would appreciate your feedback.

  5. Well I almost pulled my hair out last night..lol. I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to Linux. Having said that I was hoping I would be able to use the thumb drive build while at work and then take it home and do the same thing. I had it working great at work with 9 routers. I brought it home and I got the “crashed” error in GNS3. I was able to get it working again by messing with the working directory but I put it back in the other PC this morning and im back to square one. Is the working directory just changed in the .net file or in GNS3 preferences or both? Would the live CD and a thumb drive for storage work out any better?

    Thanks again,

  6. hmmm,
is it that the usb drive is different under both systems? or are both /mnt/sdb1
also keep both the gns3 and .net working dir on the usb
if u use the live cd and keep the workingdir in /root/Desktop/dynalive then i havent had any problems with that as of yet. but then if i need any contents i copy them over to the usb.
and dont worry there is not much of linux to learn when doing with dynaslax but a bit of moving around with the workingdir thats all , i have not yet tested all possible scenarios , but i will now as the new cd is done put up.

  7. Hi, what is the performance like when running your labs? I read all sorts about putting the .net files and images on separate disk drives to improve performance.
    Thanks in advance.

  8. dont know about the separate disk story, i just do the idlepc dance evrery time i start a lab and have had no problems yet. ( though its been three weeks since i have last opened a lab, been stuck in linux work now)

  9. Eric Lemmons Says:

Is it possible to run dynamips;GNS3/dynagen from a CD or USB flash drive under Windows XP?
    Thanks, all.
